What’s in your water? This was gonna be titled, New Cleaning items coming…

I’m about to list some natural cleaning items in my Etsy shop, but as I started writing the post I thought it better to give an explanation of why I started making non toxic cleaning items.

Since I’m taking the Challenge to change my shopping habits and only use non toxic products, I decided to add home cleaners to my product line.  So I’ve been experimenting with some new items in the lab using traditional, natural and effective ingredients that don’t make me dizzy when I use them.

When I’m cleaning my home, I cringe every time I have to dump a bucketful of chemical filled dirty water down the drain, knowing it could end up in our water system.  Though most of our water gets treated to remove harmful particles before we use it, sometimes the water doesn’t make it to the treatment plant.  Sometimes, it gets washed back out into our waterways during a heavy rain or filters into the ground near where we use it or overflows from clogged sewage pipes.

Add the fact that our city runs on an old,Combined sewage system…I shudder to think of cracking pipes, leaking out toxins into our water supply…all the time!

There are a few things we can do to reduce this point source of contamination, (catching the culprit where it strikes), which causes many health risks.

One thing is to reduce our use of chemicals. Simple.

Other things we can do are a bit more involved but easy if you know how ( I do 🙂 Install rain gardens or Greenroofs to catch and hold “excess” Stormwater, which would otherwise end up overflowing our sewage system.
