Here are some events from the fantastic staff at the New York Botanical Garden‘s Master Composters Program (of which I’m a graduate 😉 Check out the happenings, tour some community gardens in the Bronx, help our or learn how composting can help your live!

Friday, October 14 • 9 a.m.–5 p.m. •Bainbridge Avenue Garden • 2974 Bainbridge Avenue, between Bedford Park Boulevard and East 201st Street

COMPOST WORKDAY & GARDEN BED BUILD:  In the morning, help MC Janice (’05) re-set the wood & wire compost bin, then assist in the afternoon with building new beds for the garden. NOTE: Event will be cancelled if there are not enough RSVPs.

 

Saturday, October 15 • 9:30 a.m.–4 p.m. Various Community Compost Sites •

COMPOST TOUR:  We’re on the road again! Join us in the mini-van as we visit a few Bronx gardens that want to become active community compost sites. Most don’t have MCs affiliated with them, so we’ll provide whatever technical assistance they need – giving advice, assessing their site, troubleshooting, working the bins, or creating a Compost Action Plan to help them reach their long-term goals.

 

Friday, October 21 • 9 a.m.–5 p.m. La Finca del Sur Urban Farm Cooperative • East 138th Street and the Grand Concourse

COMPOST WORKDAY & SHEET MULCHING:  In the morning, help MC Annie (’10) sift through last year’s leaves and then mulch in the afternoon with cardboard and woodchips to suppress weeds in the areas where new beds will be built in the spring. NOTE: Event will be cancelled if there are not enough RSVPs.

 

Saturday, October 22 • 10:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. • New Settlement Housing Bronx Helpers Garden Club •1610-16 Walton Avenue, between Mt. Eden Avenue and East 174th Street

WORM BINS MADE EASY WORKSHOP:  Fine-tune your indoor composting skills and assist with the setup and break-down of this workshop for a youth group.

 

Saturday, October 22 • 3:30–5:30 p.m. • Bainbridge Avenue Garden • 2974 Bainbridge Avenue, between Bedford Park Boulevard and East 201st Street

FOOD SCRAP COMPOSTING WORKSHOP & WORKDAY  We’re back at Bainbridge to help MC Janice (’05) train the Norwood CSA members on how to compost their food scraps and guide them through the seasonal management & maintenance of Bainbridge’s three Earth Machines.  

 

Wednesday, October 26 • 10:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. • The New York Botanical Garden, Library Allée • Inside the Mosholu Gate, Southern Boulevard

COMPOST Q&A AND BIN SALE:  Answer composting questions, sell bins, collect contact info, and connect people to our programs.

 

SPECIAL EVENTS

Soil Health Workshop presented by GreenThumb and Just Food Trainer

Participants attending this workshop will learn the basics of soil and how it affects the plants that grow in it. Hands-on projects include determining your soil’s texture, pH for plant nutrients, as well as how to improve your soil with the use of organic matter. Registered GreenThumb community gardens will be able to request an order of compost, soil, or clean fill for early spring delivery. For more information, e-mail greenthumbinfo@parks.nyc.gov.

Thursday, October 6 • 5:30–7 p.m. • River Garden • 1086 East 180th Street, between Boston Road and Devoe Avenue

 

Volunteers Needed for MillionTreesNYC Planting Days
MillionTreesNYC has requested Master Composters to table and monitor source separation stations during tree planting days. All volunteers will receive lunch, a MillionTreesNYC t-shirt, and will be able to participate in tree planting as well. Help promote reforestation and source separation at the same time! Sites include Raoul Wallenberg Forest and elham Bay, Van Cortlandt and Shoelace Parks. To volunteer or for more details, email Junior at jschouten@nybg.org or call 718.817.8021.
